Rita Timpanaro at 12 years of age winning a Junior Hunter Class at Madison Square Garden
As a Rider...
Rita Timpanaro began riding as a child under the guidance of Frank and Wayne Carroll
and Bernie Traurig. As a junior rider, she was a member of the Pony Club and qualified
for Level I and Level II Dressage. Beginning at 12 years of age, she qualified for the
National ASPCA and AHSA (presently USEF) Medal Equitation Championship Finals.
She was a ribbon winner in each of the Finals for five consecutive years and placed in
the AHSA Junior Jumper year-end award . She competed in the Madison Square
Garden National Horse Show, at age 12, rode her horse to a win in a Junior Hunter Class
and at age 13, was awarded the ASPCA National Equitation Reserve Championship.
At 16 years of age, she went on to win the AHSA (presently USEF) Hunter Seat Medal
As a Trainer...
Upon graduation from college, Rita became a professional Hunter Jumper trainer in New
York. During her 40 years as a facility owner and manager, and trainer, she taught
riders from the rank beginner level to blue ribbon winner in the Leadline at the
Hampton Classic Horse Show, to the Prix de States Team class winner at
Harrisburg. Rita has qualified over 30 riders for the National Equitation Finals. Under her
tutelage, students have qualified for the Madison Square Garden National Horse Show,
Harrisburg, and Washington and have earned ribbon wins in the Junior Hunter, Pony
Hunter and Junior Jumper divisions.
Throughout her training career, her students have earned USEF Zone, Regional and
National year-end awards in the hunter, pony hunter and jumper divisions
including championship wins in:
• AHSA (now USEF) National Pony Equitation
• National PHA Junior Medal Championship
• National PHA Junior Medal Reserve Championship
• Best Child Rider on a Pony at Devon.
• Marshall & Sterling Insurance League Finals Children's Hunter Pony Small Division

United States Hunter Jumper Association Certified Trainer and
United States Hunter Jumper Association Certified Clinician
As a Judge...
For 40+ years, Rita has held her United States Equestrian Federation "R" judges'
license in the following divisions: Hunter, Hunter Seat Equitation, Jumper and Hunter
Breeding. During her career she has also held her Welsh and Miniature Horse judge's card.
She has judged major shows on the East and West Coasts and Canada, including Regional,
Zone and National Championships. Recently she attained her American Quarter Horse
Association specialied judges' card for over fences classes.

In 2013, Rita judged the Canada Hunter Derby Series Finals held in Alberta, Calgary,
featuring the largest Hunter Derby prize money in Canada. In 2015, Rita officiated at the
Royal Manitoba Winter Fair. "The Royal Manitoba Winter Fair is one of Western
Canada's largest agricultural events and the largest event held in Brandon, Manitoba.
It is one of only two fairs in Canada to receive Royal patronage from Queen Elizabeth II
In addition to judging USEF horse shows throughout the country, Rita has judged
Interscholastic Equestrian Association and Intercollegiate Horse Show

As a Clinician...
Rita conducts mounted Hunter Seat Equitation Clinics throughout the country. Rita is
happy to share the system she has developed during her career, with emphasis on basics,
both on the ground and on the horse. During the clinic she incorporates exercises to help
improve the position of the rider and stresses the influence the rider's aids have on the
performance of the horse. Each rider is given the opportunity to work within their abilities
and enhance their knowledge and skills.At the conclusion of the clinic, all participants,
trainers,auditors and parents are invited to ask questions. Each has the opportunity to
gain a better understanding of the system and criteria used from the judges' perspective.
Rita is a lifetime member of the United Stated Equestrian Federation , United States Hunter
Jumper Association and American Society of Equine Appraisers. She is also a member of
the American Quarter Horse Association, the National Professional Horsemen's Association
of America, Inc., The American Association for Horsemanship Safety, Inc., and The Certified Horsemanship Association. Rita has served as Vice Chairman of the USEF Junior Hunter
Committee and Vice Chairman of the Long Island Professional Horsemen's Association.
She is a past member of the USEF Continuing Education Committee, USEF Ad Hoc
Measurement Task Force, and Zone II Hunter Jumper Committee.
Rita has been published in these books:
Show Rider, The Horse Show, and Horse Show Judging for Beginners.
In addition, she has been featured in magazines such as:
Sports Illustrated,The Chronicle of the Horse, Horse Show, The Horse of Delaware Valley,
